Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of drooping or wrinkly eyelids. Blepharoplasty can correct:

  • Loose or sagging upper eyelid skin that may interfere with your vision
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Drooping lower lids
  • Fatty deposits that make your eyes appear puffy
  • Excess skin and fine wrinkles in your lower eyelids

Depending on your individual needs, Dr. Yeung may perform blepharoplasty as a single procedure or in combination with a facelift, fat transfer, or laser skin resurfacing. The goal is to deliver the most natural-looking, long-lasting results.

What can I expect from blepharoplasty?

Because everyone is different, Dr. Yeung tailors a blepharoplasty plan that’s best for you. You may need upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both. Depending on the complexity of your condition, the procedure can take up to a couple of hours.

If you’re having blepharoplasty along with a facelift, you can expect to be in surgery for a longer period of time. Dr. Yeung explains the procedures you’re having and answers your questions so you know exactly what to expect.

Dr. Yeung performs blepharoplasty while you’re under anesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain. He surgically corrects your upper or lower eyelids by removing excess skin. He makes the incisions along the natural crease lines in your eyes so there is minimal scarring.

Once he removes excess eyelid skin, he stitches the incision. You may experience some swelling and bruising after the blepharoplasty procedure. You can apply cooling eye gels the day after surgery to reduce swelling and discomfort.

What is the recovery time after eyelid surgery?

As you recover, your eyes may feel dry, itchy, and sticky. Dr. Yeung removes the stitches in 3-5 days, or some types of stitches dissolve on their own. You use eye drops or sterile ointments to help keep your eyes clean as they heal, and recovery time is typically 10-14 days. Most men and women return to work about a week after surgery.

If drooping eyelids are making you appear tired and older than you feel, call or schedule an appointment online for a consultation with Dr. Yeung.
