The Facial Fat Grafting Procedure
Fat grafting is an out-patient procedure completed under general anesthesia in the comfort of our private operating suite. To ensure that only the safest product will be injected, the fat will be separated into fat tissue, blood, and oil via a centrifuge. The blood and oil are discarded while the remaining fat tissue is then sterilized.
The sterilized fat will be injected into the sagging and drooping areas, giving them a long-lasting, younger-looking lift, filling in areas of low volume, and smoothening out lines and wrinkles. The whole procedure can be completed in less than 3 hours.
What Can You Expect from the Recovery?
Results are immediate and patients can return to their normal day to day activities (i.e. work, showering,) after 48 – 72 hours. However, if a large amount of fat was harvested from your body, full recovery may take up to 2 weeks.
Note that the treated areas may appear swollen and plump, and you will likely see some bruising. This is normal because the fat tissue takes time to be absorbed by the body. The stem cells will also help make your skin look physically younger, and after 6 months, you will be able to see a marked improvement in any sagging areas. You can expect some minor complications during recovery, such as:
- Itchiness and irritation

Facial Fat Grafting Q&A
- What is the difference between facial fat grafting and dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers use artificial gels that primarily target wrinkles and folds. Most fillers dissolve after 6-18 months. Fat grafting uses only your own body’s fat and stem cells to plump up the areas of your face that need it. The results are permanent in that the transplanted fat will become part of your normal facial tissue. Read more about facial fat grafting vs. fillers here.
- Is there an ideal age for facial fat grafting?
Most patients are in their 30s and onward after they have experienced fat loss in the face from aging, but facial fat grafting can be used to lift the sagging facial areas of patients of any age.
- What are the risks of facial fat grafting?
The transferred fat might be completely absorbed by your body, requiring another fat injection. However, facial fat grafting has minor risks due to the use of your own fat cells.
- How do I prepare for facial fat grafting?
Because it involves some measure of liposuction, avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medicine before the operation. It is also required to avoid smoking 6 weeks before surgery.
- Are the results from fat transfer permanent?
The transplanted fat will integrate into your facial tissues. Unlike filler, it does not dissolve or degrade, and in that sense, the results are permanent. That said, the aging process will continue and you may continue to experience volume loss from aging over time. Despite that, after a fat transfer, you will always have more volume in your face than you would have without a transfer.
- Is a fat transfer safe?
Yes, the fat grafting procedure is safe. Since the fat is not a foreign substance, it’s actually even safer for your body than most dermal fillers. This is especially helpful for men and women with allergies or sensitivities to some of the ingredients in dermal fillers.
