What is Involved in a Genioplasty?
Ideally, your chin helps give your face balance and proportion. But when you’re concerned about the position, shape, or contour of your chin, you may wish your face were more symmetrical and feel dissatisfied with your overall appearance.
In this blog, board-certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Cecil Yeung of the Yeung Institute explains what genioplasty is and how it may be able to help you meet your goals.
What is a genioplasty?
Genioplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that changes the way the chin looks in order to make it in better proportion with the rest of your face. This procedure is also known as chin augmentation surgery.
When is it recommended?
It may be recommended to reach any of the following goals:
- Make your facial features more balanced
- Make your face seem more symmetrical
- Improve your profile
- Restore the appearance of a chin that has changed with aging
In some cases, a genioplasty may be performed in conjunction with another procedure, such as a rhinoplasty (“nose job”).
What is involved when you’re deciding about your surgery?
You’ll first consult with your surgeon, discussing your goals. He or she will talk with you about what you can reasonably expect and perhaps show you some before-and-after pictures of other patients so you’ll be able to visualize the results.
You should discuss your medical history, including current conditions and any medications or supplements you take. Your surgeon will also carefully examine your face and possibly take an X-ray to see the underlying bone and determine the best surgical technique.
You’ll also be told about any risks or complications and will be able to ask any questions you may have.
What can you expect during the procedure?
You’ll receive local or general anesthesia before your procedure. Your surgeon can augment your chin by using a chin implant or by repositioning the jawbone, which supports the chin. The incision is usually made inside your lip or under your chin, so any scarring won’t be visible or noticeable.
The surgery will last from 1 to 4 hours, and you’ll be able to return to work in about a week.
