Considering a Blepharoplasty? Here’s What You Need to Know

woman interested in a BlepharoplastySleeplessness or feeling tired after a good night’s sleep may not be something you feel internally only, it may also show around your eyes, adding years to your appearance. Your eyelids can look droopy or puffy, and unflattering bags under your eyes make you look older. As you age, droopiness, puffiness, and under-eye bags can become permanent, giving you a tired appearance even when you feel refreshed and well rested.

With ageing, the skin surrounding your eye area will sag and lose elasticity. This loose skin results in more folds in your eyelids, which changes the natural contour of the upper eyelid. Left unchecked, this could also result in impaired vision. Loss of elasticity may also cause sagging lower eyelids, revealing the white of your eye underneath the iris. Extra skin and fine lines of the lower eyelid may also result.

While the ageing process can’t be stopped, Dr. Cecil Yeung explains in this blog post how eyelid surgery to correct these problems works as well as all you need to know when considering a blepharoplasty.

What is a blepharoplasty procedure?

A blepharoplasty procedure is a cosmetic surgery performed on the upper or lower eyelids or both. Eyelid surgery restores your youthful appearance by creating a firmer, more youthful-looking area around your eyes, while improving any vision impairments caused by hanging eyelids.

Why is blepharoplasty performed?

Specifically, blepharoplasty can be performed to:

  • Remove loose, saggy skin which makes folds, or changes the natural shape of the upper eyelid
  • Improve vision that may be impaired by loose, saggy eyelid skin
  • Remove excess fatty deposits which give a puffy appearance to eyelids
  • Reduce under the eye bags
  • Fix droopy lower eyelids that reveal the white area of the eye beneath the iris
  • Remove excess skin and fine lines in the lower eyelid
  • Achieve a refreshed and firmer-looking eye area

Am I a good candidate for eyelid surgery?

You’re a good candidate for eyelid surgery if you have:

  • Excess skin above or below your eyes
  • Hanging eyelids that affect your vision
  • A half-circle shaped line under the eyes
  • Eye puffiness
  • Skin around your eyes that adds years to your face

What can be expected when undergoing blepharoplasty surgery?

Everyone’s situation is unique, but generally speaking, here’s what you can expect with eyelid surgery:

Procedure Length

An upper or lower blepharoplasty can take 1-2 hours if it’s the only procedure, and depends on the complexity. Also, if you’re having other cosmetic procedures, the surgery time will vary.

Medications are given to eliminate pain, so you are comfortable throughout the procedure.

The Surgery

The incision lines are placed where any scars are well hidden within the natural lines of your eyelids. Fatty deposits are removed or redistributed, muscles are tightened, and excess skin is removed.

See Beautiful Results

The results of your eyelid surgery progressively appear as some swelling and bruising diminishes, revealing a smooth, more defined eyelid and surrounding eye area. Your face will have a more alert and rejuvenated appearance.

You’ll apply cold gel packs to your face to reduce the swelling. Your eyes may feel sticky, dry, or itchy, but this is temporary.

Depending on the stitches used, they will be removed in 3-5 days or dissolve on their own.

During your initial healing, you may experience some swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes. Any discomfort can be treated with eye drops, sterile ointments, and cold compresses. Drops and ointments help keep the eye area clean.

Recovery can range anywhere from 10-14 days. Your individual recovery may vary. Most people return to work in approximately one week. Any scars are minimal and well-concealed along the eyelid crease line.
