It is uncommon to be born with ears that stand out from the side of the head causing
an "elephant" look. No longer must anyone be embarrassed by this unusual condition. It is easily and successfully corrected by a surgical procedure called Otoplasty.
How it's done Incisions are made in creases behind the ears to conceal any scars. The skin and the
cartilage then are reshaped, so they may be repositioned to have a more natural
appearance closer to the head.
What to expect after surgery Pain and bruising are minimal, but the ears may remain somewhat tender for 2 to 3
weeks. A bandage is worn over the ears for several days and at night for 2 weeks. Most patients resume normal activities within a week after surgery, renewed by the
knowledge that their ears appear normal.
